How did we achieve over 300kg CO2e/m2 of Embodied Carbon Savings?

Located in Leeds’ urban quarter, 11 & 12 Wellington Place is one of the UK’s most sustainable office buildings. Mainer Associates were able to reduce the embodied carbon target by 333kg CO2e/m2, but how did we do it?

Firstly, what did we achieve?

Mainers’ role on this ambitious project

Located in Leeds’ urban quarter, 11 & 12 Wellington Place is one of the UK’s most sustainable office buildings. Mainer Associates have worked on the Wellington Place estate for over 10 years delivering sustainability consultancy for the client and delivery teams.

Appointed as Carbon Consultant, BREEAM Assessor & AP, Fitwel Ambassador and Acoustician, Mainer was integral in the development of the project sustainability credentials achieving BREEAM Outstanding, Fitwel 2 Star and reducing the embodied carbon target by 333kg CO2e/m2.

11 & 12 Wellington Place

Following appointment by the client MEPC pre-contract, Mainer partnered with Wates, the contractor, to offer a Carbon Consultant role which focused on reducing the targeted embodied carbon intensity for the build.

The original embodied carbon result of 866kg CO2e/m2 was significantly reduced to a figure of 533kg CO2e/m2 at practical completion.

This saving represents an incredible achievement by the whole team and key to this success was the close collaboration with Wates on the supply chain data.

Mainer were responsible for gathering and reviewing all the supply chain data, this ensured the quantification was exact and that our expertise could identify clear opportunities for real reduction in embodied carbon. Mainer are proud to share that we have now been appointed to deliver the Carbon Consultant role for Wates at 9 Wellington Place.

Mainer can partner with the construction team to offer a Carbon Consultancy role which manages the supply chain data from design through to practical completion to deliver the absolute best embodied carbon results for the project.

With net zero ambitions growing in the UK, Mainer strongly believe that the supply chain management role is key to the success of net zero in the built environment.

Embodied Carbon Experts

“I led this assessment from tender stage and managed the process through RIBA Stage 4, Construction, and onwards to Practical Completion. I was part of the construction team who collaborated to achieve this fantastic result with key stake holders, within the supply chain.

As well as the project stakeholders, I couldn't have done this without the help from the fantastic Mainer Associates team.

Deep diving into the supply chain has been a tough but rewarding experience, crucial in delivering this piece of work to reach an as-built result ready for third party verification."
