BREEAM Assessments

What is a BREEAM Assessment?

BREEAM, or the Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Methodology, is a framework which helps measure the environmental impact of an asset in the built environment – supporting sustainable practices of new and existing buildings. It is a globally recognised third party certification standard established by BRE in 1990.

Since then, more than 600,000 BREEAM certificates have been awarded to date in 93 countries worldwide, with more than 2.3 million buildings having been registered for assessment.

The process itself is a holistic assessment of the environmental impact of a construction project. The main goal is to help improve the asset’s performance at all stages; from design through construction, to use and refurbishment.

BREEAM is usually completed in two stages: the design stage and the post construction stage – which can provide two certificates.

Credits are awarded by BREEAM Assessors for meeting certain criteria within nine categories and innovation credits.

These categories can be adapted to local and climatic conditions for bespoke assessments.

These credits are then calculated to credit a BREEAM score, which then translates into a BREEAM Star Rating from 1-5.
