Postcards from One Click LCAs Summer School

This Summer our Graduates have gone from novices to competent uses of One Click LCA software at Summer School 2022

Having already embarked on the BREEAM Associate training course our graduates Dan, Alice and Chris spent part of their Summer learning about the versatile tool that is One Click LCA. We present a brief overview of One Click LCA plus their thoughts on how the Summer School was and what they learnt.

What is One Click LCA?

One Click LCA is the world-leading construction sector life-cycle assessment software that helps you calculate and reduce the environmental impacts of your construction projects, products, and portfolios. As well as decarbonizing building and infrastructure projects, One Click LCA can also help you to generate and manage Environmental Product Declarations (EPD), and real estate portfolio greenhouse gas reports.

One Click LCA commercial tools support all impact categories and life-cycle stages, as well as compliance for certifications such as LEED and BREEAM, BIM integrations, all materials categories, and advanced functionality, reporting, support and training.

Who was the course aimed at?

This course is designed for students, graduates and professionals who wish to gain an understanding of life-cycle assessment (LCA), as well as hands-on experience in performing LCA and carbon assessments.

Course Overview

We asked our Graduates for their thoughts on how good the course was, what they had learnt and

“My first exposure to One Click came through the summer camp, by where over 2 weeks I was taken from a novice in conducting and understanding LCA, to someone who is now competent in using the One Click software to establish embodied carbon baselines for buildings.”

I was exposed to a plethora of knowledge spanning a wide range of topics relating to LCA, such as construction materials and their carbon outputs, how to conduct embodied carbon assessments on One Click and understanding the legislation relating to building regulations in Europe, but to name a few.

If I look back on my experience, the team who delivered the sessions did a great job in helping both novices and others with prior experience, to understand how LCA can be conducted and to simplify its processes. I gained an appreciation as to the power of LCA in demonstrating to clients how sustainable construction materials and practices can have such a powerful effect in changing perceptions to a more greener construction sector.

“The LCA Academy has given me great exposure to the use of One Click LCA within construction sector. This learning was grounded through the LCA One Click Summer school, through which I have gained insight into the life cycle and material impacts of projects.”

The summer school also gave me the skills to use the Carbon Designer Software which allows you to benchmark and track improvements of buildings.

The summer school also covered how to identify EPD’s as well as the steps involved in creating one so I can gain a better understanding of the process of choosing products based on their environmental performance. This is especially important with the construction sector the result of 50% of all material extractions.

The Layout of the summer school with live online sessions from teachers all over the world was a great way to bring a variety of knowledge into a compact format. The training also went into country specific guidance which helps to expand my knowledge outside of UK based projects.

I hope to continue to get exposure to the LCA software and use it in projects moving forward.

“The One Click Summer School was a well-structured learning experience, giving me the teachings and first-hand practice of the One Click system.”

I learned about the company’s sustainability goals, the process of Life Cycle Assessment, Environmental Product Declarations and the BIM programs used in the building industry.

I found that the Summer School was very well taught, with the teachers being interested and involved in the usage of One Click. This made it much easier to get through the lessons and exam.

I enjoyed lesson four where I was given trial access to One Click so that I could, with the guidance of the lesson, practice using this tool. I found that this practice was a massive help to me when I used One Click after this summer school ended.

This system is a very important tool for people working in the sustainable building industry.

What next for our Graduates?

All our graduates are now look forward to re-engaging with One Click for their EPD Bootcamp that has already been running through September. This course will help them gain an understanding of product life-cycle assessment (LCA), carbon footprint (CFP) and Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) as well as hands-on experience in performing CFPs and EPDs.
